Christmas is over for another year, but the staff and students at Checotah Public Schools still have gifts coming in — from Apple computers to band instruments.

Country music superstar Carrie Underwood, Checotah’s most famous graduate, made wishes come true at her alma mater over the holidays, donating another $350,000 to the district through her Checotah Animal, Town, and School Foundation.

“It’s wonderful. Carrie, she is such a great kid. We’ve known her all her life, and we’re so thankful that … she hasn’t forgotten where she grew up,” Assistant Superintendent Toni Brown said.

All four of Checotah’s schools will benefit from the donation.

“Late last year each of the schools created a list of their needs and I am so thrilled that the C.A.T.S. Foundation was able to fund it all,” Underwood said in a news release. “It gives me great joy knowing we are helping my hometown schools to offer an even better education to the students. They deserve it.”

In October, the 2005 “American Idol” winner returned to her hometown to help 200 volunteers assemble a custom-designed playground at Marshall Elementary School. Underwood hinted then that her foundation soon would be giving more aid to the district.

Carrie Underwood Wins Three Awards At ACAs

Fox’s American Country Awards did right by its network Monday night, handing out several of its trophy guitars to singers that initially found fame on American Idol.

Carrie Underwood picked up three awards, including female artist of the year and female single of the year for Mama’s Song.

“You guys vote like crazy,” Carrie said during one acceptance speech.

Monday’s three wins bring Carrie’s total number of the ACA blue guitars to nine. She won six awards last year.

Brad Paisley are Carrie Underwood are facing some downright nasty competition (if one believes they are truly competing for their jobs as CMA co-hosts). In the just released commercial for the November 9 broadcast, Miss Piggy throws open the audition room door and proclaims the job hers.

“Feast your eyes on the new host of the CMA Awards,” Piggy declares with her usual pomp and circumstance as Paisley, Underwood, the Osmonds and the kids from ‘The Middle’ look on. “Still here?” she asks last year’s co-hosts as she struts by, laughing. Underwood and Paisley can’t believe the rudeness.

“And I thought you were a ham,” Underwood tells Paisley as Piggy exits. This all seems to be for show, as the two country stars were assured the gig months ago. The commercials are a creative way to remind viewers to tune into Nashville’s biggest night next month.
